1/14/08 Learning goals

Hi everyone!
So I guess this is the first post for our blog! OK, after looking over the syllabus and getting a general idea of the intentions for this class, I have come up with a few goals for myself. In general, I want to have a good understanding of the current benchmarks for language arts, and ideas as how to effectively implement these into fun, creative, and meaningful lessons for the classroom. Also, I want to have a better grasp on basic elements of grammar, writing, and reading, so I can feel confident teaching this myself. In all of my TE classes so far , we talk about how to implent whatever subject we are focusing on towards building a classroom community, and I want to know how to use language arts to do this as well, since this subject area seems to be the most widelt used topic throughout the day.
These goals are the most important ones to me thus far, and I'm sure as class continues, I will have many more. I look forward to learning a lot from this class, and gaining valuable expierence through teaching language arts in the classroom.

Check out the Michigan Department of Education website for the benchmarks- you can search by grade and content area, and I believe you can also get some sort of K-12 overview for each subject. I think that integration of language arts into the other subject areas is ESSENTIAL because when you think about how people in the "real world" use literacy, the majority of the time it isn't to read stories (though that is also important). I suspect that this will come up often this semester.

I think creativity is key when it comes to planning a language arts lesson. Some of the best language arts teachers I had growing up were those that really encouraged me to be creative with my writing instead of sticking to all of the rules. If we convince our students that language arts can be fun, they will be more likely to come to class enthused and ready to learn.

I had never thought of that before, but you are right, language arts is the most widely used subject throughout the day. Growing up I did not realize the influence my teachers had on my attitude towards language arts. And I think you are right, that using what you gain from this class will help you create a better classroom community, and hopefully allow the kids to enjoy language arts as well.

It is very important to know the benchmarks of the subject you are teaching especially in a subject that you are unfamiliar with. I agree with you when you say you want a better understanding of the basic concepts that go into language arts because it is hard to teach something you yourself do not feel comfortable teaching. My best experiences with language arts was when the teacher was confident and was not afraid to take risks and I believe you want to take those risks. Do not be scared this class will give you that confidence.
